Establishing a self-care routine that works for you is crucial during this time in quarantine. These are 5 steps to take today.
Indulging in the things that make us happy is the first step to ensuring self-care. We spend plenty of time working and taking care of our home needs, that it can be easy to forget our personal needs. Self-care relies on increased self-awareness and by practicing this awareness you will be able to recognize patterns and receive advantages like sleeping better, improved focus, and stronger relationships. Your positive daily routine can and will support a happier and healthier outlook for you to enjoy. Take a moment to explore these 5 steps you can include in your self-care regimen.
Draw a Bath
The tip step we are going to talk about, bathing! Not just getting in the shower and getting out, but actually allowing your muscles to relax in warm water, drawn with bath salts illuminated only by candles or low lighting. Play some relaxing music and grab that book you have been dying to finish. Reserve the bathroom for 30 minutes or so and embrace your homemade spa. Additional tips to make this experience even better are heating up your towel and enjoying a nice cup of herbal tea after your relaxing bath. Even if you are not able to do this every day, whenever you can commit fully to this self-care regimen. Your body will thank you.
Getting active seems like a lot of work, but when it comes to working out at home, you are able to skip a few steps and get right to it. This is the best time to learn a new skill. You don’t have to impress anyone or prove anything to a set of classmates. Take that kickboxing class on Instagram live, or do daily workouts with Sydney Cummings on YouTube. The possibilities with home workouts or classes are endless. Don’t have the proper attire or gear? No worries. As long as you have access to the Internet, and don’t mind getting creative, there are plenty of platforms that will meet you where you are. You can even take a ballet class where all you need is some space and something to hold on to for balance. You should be able to be active and move from your desk besides lunchtime. If you find yourself in a time crunch, work while you eat lunch then squeeze in a 20-minute workout. Something is better than nothing.
Go on a Walk
Depending on where you live and how intense the winters get there, you have the option of going on a brisk or long walk that will allow you to get fresh air, intake Vitamin D, and feel energized. After being home for days straight or even just 24 hours indoors, can make the outdoors feel foreign. By going on walks and engaging with the outdoors, your eyesight will be stronger, pain in the body is mitigated and your immune system will receive a natural boost. Avoid being labelled as a stranger by your neighbours and let the outdoors be a part of your weekly or even daily routine. The sun and fresh oxygen provide more for your body than anything indoors does.
Yoga or Meditate
While we have tips on how to be active, it is also beneficial to time to relax your mind and body. This can be done with a quick meditation followed by yoga. Schedule a time where you are not to be disturbed and find a quiet space in your home (this can be outdoors as well). Slip-on your yoga dance pants then sit comfortably on you rolled out your towel or yoga matt, and close your eyes. Focus on your breath and allow your mind to quiet down. Once you have created the environment you need to meditate or do yoga in, you have the options of following videos online or listening to an app on your phone. Explore books, podcasts and anything else related to mental health to help guide you through your journey.
Paint as a hobby
Some people have taken on DIY projects during this time or learning a new language. If those are too much for you or don’t spark your interest, maybe a little creative simplicity will do the trick. Painting is a skill that can be done by multiple media and can be incorporated into almost every project. If you are dying to give your home an accent wall, you can paint this yourself. However, if painting a wall is too much, but you want to get creative on a smaller scale this is even easier to accomplish. To get started, you can explore YouTube for tutorials on painting landscapes, still life and more. Paints, canvases, or drawing paper are all easily accessible through online stores as well as your local craft store. Let your creative side blossom while you relax and embrace this new self-care regimen.
